If you’re a foodie like me, everywhere you go you want to try new foods! Holland has a great array of foods to try that are mouthwatering!
Food is a great way to experience the culture and the country you are in. Although I am normally a health freak, I decided to give myself a break during my vacation and splurge a little bit.
Here are 10 foods (in no particular order) I think you should try if you have the opportunity to go to the Netherlands.
This snack is a waffle cookie with maple syrup smeared on the inside. You can buy these at any supermarket, but I recommend getting one freshly made on Bloemenmarkt! They are delicious when they are warm!
Since Indonesia was once a colony of The Netherlands, this has lots of Indonesian influences and yummy flavors. If you are not sure of what to try, I recommend nasi rice, kroepoek, peanut sauce chicken kabobs, and sambal spiced meat.
This is a yogurt dessert that tastes like pudding. It is sold in supermarkets and look like milk cartons. This espcially tastes good after a good meal with a cup of warm coffee!
These creme/pudding filled rolls are to die for! Get them at a local bakery. Dusted in powdered sugar, these treats are mouth watering.
A Dutch classic! This is a raw fish you eat on a sandwich and onions. Eat them as soon as you can because the fresher the better! This is an acquired taste, but don’t diss it until you try it!
Apple pies are AMAZING in holland! They are fresh as can be and are not too sweet. These are perfect to eat as a snack in a cute cafe with hot coffee.
7. Poffertjes and Pancakes
A Dutch pancake is unlike American ones; they can’t even compare! They are fluffier, bigger, and TO DIE FOR! Poffertjes are tiny little pancakes that you can order by the dozen. Pancakes are a cultural food stable across Holland; they have restaurants called Pancake Houses that are themed with gnomes and dwarfs (among other theme too!) Check these out!
These are chocolate Dutch sprinkles. They are perfect for breakfast on a warm bread with fresh butter. It’s basically dessert for breakfast!
Most people grimace at the thought of this food, but if you are feeling adventurous I would recommend you give this ago. It literally translate to “sausage/meat spread” but if you put the name beside, it is super yummy. I eat it on dutch bread for a good midday snack. Would you try this? Let me know in the comments 🙂
Dutch cows are proven to be the best at making dairy. Try all types of cheeses at the local dairy and be amazed at every shape, size, and flavor created!
